New River Remediation in planning
Estimates indicate that between 5 and 20 million gallons per day (MGD) of raw sewage enter the New River from Mexicali into Imperial Valley
Here’s how that adds up annually:
5 MGD → 5 × 365 = ~1.8 billion gallons per year
20 MGD → 20 × 365 = ~7.3 billion gallons per year
So, each year roughly 1.8 to 7.3 billion gallons of untreated sewage flow from Mexico into the New River before it reaches the Salton Sea basin.
This massive influx poses significant water quality and public health concerns throughout Imperial Valley.

Renewa New River Remediation Project in Development
Renewa is actively developing an advanced system designed to significantly reduce pollution flowing from Mexico into the Salton Sea basin. This system will capture heavy metals and decrease the level of contaminants entering the New River, both from cross-border sources and agricultural runoff originating in the Imperial Valley.

Renewa Tijuana River Remediation in development
Each year, billions of gallons of untreated and partially treated sewage and contaminated water flow down the Tijuana River into the U.S., ultimately reaching the Tijuana Estuary and Pacific Ocean:
A San Diego County Water Board report (about 2023) estimated 35–70 billion gallons per year from Tijuana into the marine environment.
In 2023 alone, over 44 billion gallons of contaminated water crossed into San Diego County, the highest on record latimes.com.
Cumulatively, in just the past five years (since late 2018), the IBWC estimates more than 100 billion gallons of untreated sewage, industrial waste, and runoff have entered via the Tijuana River.
Period Estimated Volume (gallons)Annually (avg)35–70 billion In 2023 alone~44 billion Over past 5 years Over 100 billion
These massive flows have led to frequent beach closures in Imperial Beach and nearby areas, with significant public health concerns—such as waterborne pathogens and toxic pollution—and visible ecological damage. Authorities on both sides of the border are under pressure to improve wastewater infrastructure. The U.S. EPA has even demanded Mexico take urgent action to stem the sewage overflows
